Favorite Movie Poster

The movie poster I chose is the one for Valhalla Rising, a film which came out a couple of years ago and was directed by my favorite director, Nicolas Winding Refn. I think it--like the movie--is very atmospheric and has an air of mystery. The placement of the Viking-age warrior (and his sword) against a sparse-yet-beautiful northerly background, enshrouded in mist, and with no other distracting figures (human or otherwise) in sight, makes for a very compelling image.

Response: "How To Ruin A Great Design"
In response to the article "How to Ruin a Great Design," I thought that the author made several good points. Poorly-laid-out designs, particularly those utilized in traffic signage or things that are similarly urgent in nature, can be very distracting and ultimately have the opposite effect of that which is intended. In spite of making a number of agreeable observations, I felt the article would have been more effective if it had utilized more visual examples. Likely, it had more impact for Londoners, who would've been immediately familiar with several of the references he made. To an American, many of the comparisons between new and old traffic signage (the London Bridge sign, for example) were not visuals that could be easily retrieved from visual memory, so additional pictorial examples would've been helpful.
Product Design
Product Design That I Like
My friend Brigham has recently begun using his metal and woodworking skills to dabble in making old-style weapons. I think his designs are extremely inventive and cool. This is one of the first ones that he did. I like the design because it's aesthetically-pleasing and--were it to be used as a weapon of war--seems as if it would be extremely effective.
